The Chairman of Life Education Tasmania Inc, Stuart Bryce, along with his daughter, Emma and colleagues from Victoria and Western Australia trekked in New Guinea over the Finisterre Range and Shaggy Ridge in July/August to raise money for Life Education. “Finisterre” is Latin for “End of the World”.
The nine-day Trek took in the site of the historic WWII battles of Shaggy Ridge and Crater Hill where valiant soldiers from the 7th Division were victorious in precipitating the dislodgement of Japanese forces from New Guinea. A brief remembrance service was held at the “Pimple” a scene of intense fighting in December 1943/January 1944. In particular, we remembered the father of two of our fellow trekkers and Tom Kelly, the father of John Kelly who was the inspiration for us to undertake the trek.
The trek was arduous and at times hazardous. Most of our paths were carved from virgin jungle, as were our campsites on most nights. The conditions experienced by our valiant soldiers during WWII must have been so much worse with disease taking a significant toll, not to mention the engagement with the Japanese forces.
Hopefully, we have raised awareness for Life Education, dedicated to saving the lives of our children through education programmes which empower children from preparatory to Year 10 to make reasoned decisions regarding alcohol and other drugs, as well as teaching them self respect, respect for others and realising the value of their uniqueness as an individual. The website remains open and there is still time to make a contribution to this worthy organization.
Your donations will assist Life Education to embrace more of our children in educational programs throughout Australia but particularly in Tasmania where Life Education has recently been reintroduced. All donations are tax-deductible and can be made through this secure website.
